The Fleming girls volleyball team is looking to build on its overwhelming success from last season, but the Wildcats are getting a bit of a late start compared to other area teams. Their opening match, slated for Saturday morning at Wiley, will be their first since the fall of 2019.
The Wildcats enter the new year as the defending 1A state champions, earning their seventh program state title in 2019. They entered the state tournament as a No. 4 seed and easily swept Briggsdale in three sets, 25-16, 25-14 and 25-20.
Fleming began that season with a 3-1 loss to the very same team it defeated on the state stage to complete its full-circle reclamation of glory. It finished the schedule with a dominant 29-4 record. The young and dangerous Wildcats return their entire squad for the upcoming 2021 season and now look to capitalize on their previous success.
Merino volleyball also looking to build on strong 2019
The Merino girls were just one match away from reaching yet another state title game in 2019.
The Rams, who have one of the most prolific volleyball programs in Colorado with 10 crowns, entered last season’s 1A state tournament as the top seed in the state. Nearby Fleming, who boasted the No. 4 seed, stopped them in their tracks in the semifinals with a 3-1 decision. Merino finished yet another impressive season with a 27-3 record.
The Rams lost just three seniors from last season and look to have another strong year with the remaining players. They’ll begin the shortened 2021 calendar on Thursday as they face off with Holyoke in a triangular.
Sterling boys soccer falls in first match of 2021
The Sterling boys soccer team faced a tough test in its opening game of the season last Thursday against Frontier Academy. The Wolverines entered the game very much on the attack against their Sterling foes as they walked away with a 6-0 victory, giving the Tigers their first loss of the season.
The Tigers didn’t get much room on their offensive prowess either as the Wolverine defense only allowed two shots on goal, neither of which went in. In the other net, however, Sterling junior keeper Chase Albrandt put on a show with 15 saves.
The Tigers look to bounce back when they host Estes Park at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
