ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. —

The Pennsylvania Department of Health is matching federal guidelines for visits at nursing homes.

Acting Health Secretary Alison Beam highlighted the new recommendations during a news conference Monday at Masonic Village in Elizabethtown, Lancaster County.

Some family members and friends have already been able to take advantage of the in-person visits the state is encouraging.

Officials said the increased number of vaccinated people warrants restoring indoor visits in many cases.

Because so many people in nursing homes have been vaccinated, officials said, visitors don’t have to be.

The updated guidance comes as welcome news for many people still waiting to get immunized but anxious to see loved ones in long-term care facilities.

“These benchmarks that make us really realize the investment of our efforts in things like the vaccination rate and really, it’s a testament to what our communities have done by way of mask-wearing, socially distancing. These are the small steps that we’re going to be able to take that feel like such a great reward,” Beam said.

More information about the revised guidance is available at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services website.
